Wigan - Greater Manchester is one of the larger locations that you will find in Manchester England. Located on the side of River Douglas and close to not only Liverpool, but to Preston and Manchester as well. This area was one that would be run by the Celtic Tribes in the past.
First settled and created as a borough during the year 1246 this is a very old location. Like many that you will find in this part of the world. Wigan Sheds The history is simply amazing and will offer many people a wonderful visit. During that year of 1246 the town would receive its charter to hold market from King Henry III.
During the Industrial Revolution this town would see a huge increase in population. There would be coal mining that would start around the year 1450. During that time over 1,000 different pits would be dug in order to find coal to mine. A bit of trivia about this location is that the town council would state that it would not be odd to have a coal mine located in the back of your home.
While the location of the Wigan Pier would become famous when George Orwell would write about it. In his book titled The Road to Wigan Pier Orwell would talk about how the people lived in the area during the years of the 1930s.
Eventually a decline would be noticed in the area and mining industry. Those locations of the warehouses that were located on the pier were chanced into a culture and heritage center. This location holds a total of more than 200 buildings that are listed on the historical sites in the country.
It is well worth a chance to see some of those buildings of the past by heading to this location for a visit. Check out Mab's Cross, a medieval cross that was put up back in the thirteenth century, you will find it in Mesnes Park.
